Why is a balanced diet important we must ask? Well, eating healthy is vital for everyone but when you have had breast cancer becoming aware of what you eat and drink becomes a priority and an essential part of your life. As a breast cancer survivor, I have much to say and research has proven that dietary habits play a major role in an individual’s life. Lot of research is being carried out to find out how food may affect the risk of cancer developing. Being extra overweight would be a number one issue and it highly increases your risk of cancer.

Being diagnosed with a malignant cancer a decade ago had left me thinking why the cruel invader had got into my healthy system but as I look back and ponder it might probably had been an issue about me having the wrong diet all the while.

Fighting a malignancy was no bed time story at all but the will and positivity to fight the cancer made me more realistic towards life and made me aware as to what healthy eating habits were meant to be.

For overall health eating a balanced diet would be a great option to consider. Staying at a healthy weight could reduce the risk as it improves the energy level of the body.

The world cancer research fund suggests that women who have had breast cancer follow advice and support so as to lower the risk of getting cancer. This includes good eating healthy habits, being physically active and maintaining a good healthy weight BMI.

Inclusion of High fibre foods has many benefits as it goes about making changes to your overall digestive health and eliminates diseases like stroke and heart attacks too. These foods tend to be lower in calories and reduces hunger pangs giving you a feeling of fullness.

Talking to your doctor and getting referred to a dietician could ultimately change your way of eating and give you positivity to plan your meals confidently to shrug off aby dietary problems you might have.

Here, I have mentioned some foods that helped me in my journey towards the cancer eliminating process. Remember its very essential not to feel guilty if you have not had a healthy diet regime

During cancer treatments we tend to experience emotional upheavals but remind yourself that this would soon subside. Physically we feel a burn out and every task that we do feel like a mountain climbing activity. For this the nostril breathing exercises proved indeed fruitful (Breath from right nostril and breath out from the other) works wonders and gives an individual a sense of upliftment and strength. The simple breathing removes all the toxins from the body leaving you feeling vibrant and full of life.

To eat a balanced diet, try and combine variety of foods that consists of fruits, vegetables(greens) protein and little of carbohydrates.

  • A portion of five juicy fruits and vegetables
  • Wholegrain carbohydrates if possible, bran, , brown rice, sweet potatoes  etc.
  • Dairy alternatives like, Soya drinks yogurts which has to be low in fats and sugar.
  • Beans, pulses, fish, eggs and other protein. Fish tends to top the list and have at least two portions every week.
  • A portion of five juicy fruits and vegetables
  • Wholegrain carbohydrates if possible, bran, brown rice, sweet potatoes etc.


Foods to avoid: -Limit the amount of fat you eat particularly saturated fats because this increases the risk of heart diseases. High saturated fats are butter, fatty cuts of red meat, processed meats, full dairy products and cheese.

Avoid sugary food like cakes and chocolates. Replace them with avocados nuts and seeds.
